  22. <p>     Beauty is suspect these days. Any movie that luxuriates in
  23. decor and landscape will be seen to dawdle (Aren't these the
  24. passages we all skipped over in the novels our English teachers
  25. demanded we read?). A pretty face in a pretty picture stirs all
  26. sorts of righteous suspicions about artists who wallow in
  27. nostalgia for the glamorous artifacts of a despotic past.

  29. <p>     So the physical splendor of Zhang Yimou's Raise the Red
  30. Lantern can seem at best anachronistic, at worst reactionary.
  31. Even the film's nomination for this year's foreign-language
  32. Academy Award might attest to the bland gentility of its
  33. virtues, if only because Red Lantern reprises the dour theme and
  34. visual extravagance of 1988's big winner, The Last Emperor. But
  35. this obscures the point of a brave, passionate and highly
  36. entertaining work of art. In the best movies, style reflects
  37. substance. And in this story of a wealthy man in 1920s China and
  38. the four women he keeps in pampered imprisonment, the decor
  39. underlines the sad fable of Woman as ornament. As the heroine
  40. says, "I'm just one of the master's robes. He can wear it or
  41. take it off."
  42. </p>
  43. <p>     Her name is Songlian (Gong Li), and she has just come to
  44. be the fourth concubine of the Master (Ma Jingwu). The first
  45. mistress is old and irrelevant; the second is ingratiating,
  46. lethal, with "a Buddha's face and a scorpion's heart"; the third
  47. a saucily imperious opera singer. Each day the chamberlain will
  48. raise the red lantern in front of one of their houses, and that
  49. woman will be blessed with the Master's favors. His strategy,
  50. supported by millenniums of male domination, is divide and
  51. conquer. So the caged princesses must play power games, with
  52. their rivals as opponents and their servants as pawns. Subtly,
  53. sullenly, the women flaunt their femininity--and in doing so
  54. destroy any chance for their sisterhood to flower. Songlian, the
  55. youngest, is the first to rebel against this system. A tragic
  56. comeuppance awaits her.

  58. <p>     The emotional anchor for all Zhang's films is Gong Li--her face a map of cool insurrection, her figure proud and
  59. voluptuously Western. But Red Lantern offers other, more exalted
  60. orders of ogling. As it plays out its melodrama, it radiates a
  61. ravishing color scheme; it delights in the symmetrical framing
  62. of gorgeous objects, human and architectural. For the Westerner,
  63. it offers a tour of exotic lands and customs: China in its last
  64. imperial gasp. How very sumptuous, you will say of the visual
  65. style--though Red Lantern was made for an impossibly thrifty
  66. $1 million.

  68. <p>     And how very Chinese--though this film, like Zhang's
  69. earlier Ju Dou, has yet to be shown on the mainland. The
  70. authorities see that both pictures, about rebellious young
  71. people crushed by mean old men, abound in dangerous political
  72. implications. And so, to their eternal discredit, the old men
  73. who run China have deprived their nation of the profound and
  74. pertinent pleasures that China's best filmmaker has provided for
  75. the rest of the world. Zhang is one in a billion. When will the
  76. billion get to see his work?
